Pérez 'extremely satisfied' with showing
27 October 2013 – McLaren driver Sergio Pérez was overjoyed with his top five finish in Sunday's Indian Grand Prix, conceding that he is at present under "a lot of pressure" to perform.
Having started ninth and on the Medium tyre, Pérez moved through the field as those on the Soft rubber made their first stops. Despite losing ground after his final visit to the pit lane, he pulled off a series of clean overtaking manoeuvres to regain ground.
Two of those passes came at once along the back straight, where the Mexican confidently disposed of Lotus' Kimi Räikkönen and Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton.
"Fifth place is a great result for me," Pérez explained to the gathered media after the race. "Without question, I have a lot of pressure on my shoulders, but it's always sweeter when you perform well while under pressure. I'm extremely satisfied.
"In the closing laps, it was a fantastic feeling to get past Kimi and Lewis in a single move. I just braked as late as I could for Turn 4 to try and keep Lewis behind."
He summed up: "It's been a tough season for us, but today's result is a promising sign and really motivates the whole workforce ahead of the last three races."
Jenson Button wound up 14th in the sister McLaren, having picked up a puncture in the early stages of the race after opening lap contact with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.
