McLaren: Still no decision on Pérez
31 October 2013 – McLaren is yet to make a decision over Sergio Pérez's future at the team, Sporting Director Sam Michael confirmed ahead of his weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Pérez, who delivered a season-best fifth in India last time out, is expected to remain alongside Jenson Button next year, although team boss Martin Whitmarsh has long stated that the Woking-based outfit is in no rush to finalise its driver line-up plans.
And with just three races to run, Michael says a verdict has still not been reached.
"In terms of Checo, he's pushing very hard at the moment," said Michael during a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in. "He's staying focused, he's driving well, working well with the engineers and ultimately that's what we expect him to do.
"In terms of contracts going forward, we're not in a position to announce anything yet. As soon as we are then obviously all of our staff and all of you guys [the media] will know as soon as possible because there wouldn't be any reason to not do that."
Michael added that he has been impressed by the attitude both drivers have shown throughout an ultimately below-par season, with the pair pushing the team forward.
"I think one thing I should say is that both drivers have done a fantastic job supporting the team, especially during the first third of the year where we had some particularly difficult qualifying and race sessions," Michael explained of his drivers' influence.
"They kept their heads up and pushed the team along to a point where we can try and consistently get both cars in the top ten and get positions back in the Constructors, at least up to fifth place. It's not where we need to be but it's going in the right direction."
