Vettel praises 'very good' Webber lap
2 November 2013 – Although he was left feeling slightly disappointed with his own qualifying performance, Sebastian Vettel says team-mate Mark Webber was fully deserving of pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after delivering "a very good lap" in the final shootout phase.
The German, who ultimately lacked 0.118 seconds to the top spot, endured a sloppy opening sector on his final timed attempt, but remains confident of fighting for victory in tomorrow's race after completing a series of positive simulations during practice.
"We were still pretty competitive and it's a great result for team," said Vettel in the post-qualifying press conference. "At the start of qualifying Mercedes looked very, very strong, especially in Q2. Mark and myself weren't hanging about – they were strong.
"We found a bit of extra time in Q3 and Mark did a very good lap. I should have done a little better but I don't know if it would have been enough. Mark deserves to be on pole; it was a very good lap with no mistakes. We should have a strong race tomorrow."
Vettel is gunning for his seventh straight Formula 1 victory this weekend, a total that would bring him level with the record set by Michael Schumacher back in 2004.
