Alonso rues error-strewn qualifying
2 November 2013 – Fernando Alonso has blamed himself for not progressing to the final qualifying phase in Abu Dhabi on Saturday evening, admitting that he did not complete a clean Q2 lap.
The Ferrari driver, whose championship hopes were officially ended at the Indian Grand Prix, could only classify 11th in the second of the three segments, marking the first time this season that he has failed to make it through to the final shootout.
"This qualifying has been as difficult as the rest of the weekend, even if in some races, starting 11th on new tyres can help, so let's hope that's the case here," said Alonso. "It is without a doubt better to make it through to Q3 but unfortunately I didn't manage to get a very clean lap and I didn't manage to make it by a few tenths.
"This is one of the tracks where we suffer a bit more than usual, but in general our Sunday performance is better and so, our approach to the race is positive. We must get a good start, stay focused and run a perfect race if we want to take points towards our aim of finishing second in the Constructors', because it will be a tough fight."
Felipe Massa progressed to Q3 and finished eighth fastest in the sister Ferrari, a result that puts the Brazilian level with Alonso in the head-to-head qualifying table.
