Räikkönen leaves circuit after clash
3 November 2013 – Kimi Räikkönen has departed the Yas Marina Circuit early after enduring a first corner collision in Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Finn, who had started from the back of the grid, made contact with the Caterham of Giedo van der Garde.
Having created headlines throughout the weekend amid his salary dispute with Lotus, Räikkönen was excluded from Saturday's qualifying results after his car failed a front floor deflection test, with the outfit unable to satisfy the stewards with their explanation.
And as the twilight race got underway – with Räikkönen electing to start at the tail-end of the order instead of the pit lane – the former World Champion was squeezed to the inside of the first corner before his car ran into the side of van der Garde's Caterham.
"I got the inside and I somehow managed to touch the Caterham," Räikkönen told the gathered media after returning to the paddock. "It was not a hard hit, just very unlucky."
After ditching his overalls, Räikkönen then proceeded to leave the circuit prematurely.
