Angry Maldonado accuses mechanics
17 November 2013 – Pastor Maldonado suggested that Williams mechanics tampered with his car after being eliminated from the first phase of qualifying for the United States Grand Prix.
Maldonado, who said he was "very happy" to be departing the Grove-based outfit in the run up to the Austin event, could finish no higher than 18th in Q1, while rookie team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who ultimately reached Q3, topped the timesheets.
"I never got 100 percent from the tyres, I think somebody is playing with the pressure or temperature, it's not that clear," Maldonado explained to reporters after qualifying.
"It’s difficult to say, I think you need to go and ask the team and the guys who are working on the car. I think it's quite clear. We have one more race to go so… great."
Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams played down Maldonado's words, suggesting that the frustration of qualifying so far down the order got the better of her driver.
"Qualifying is a big adrenaline rush for the drivers and so I'm not surprised, people say things after these kind of situations," Williams said when questioned over the matter by Sky Sports. "We will go back and talk to the engineers and find out what happened but never in Williams' history would we ever do anything like that."
