Magnussen: Button will be great team-mate
4 December 2013 – Kevin Magnussen believes Jenson Button will be a 'great team-mate' next season and he is 'ready to learn' from the 2009 F1 world champion and make the most of his 'huge experience'.
The Dane, who won this year's Formula Renault 3.5 title and who is a member of McLaren’s young driver programme, makes the step up at the expense of Sergio Pérez, who has been discarded by the squad after just one season.
“I'm ready to learn from Jenson – he has huge experience,” Magnussen confirmed in a Q&A with McLaren’s fans on Twitter. “I'll make the most of the opportunity – he’ll be a great team-mate.”
Magnussen also added that the way Lewis Hamilton performed in his debut season with the Woking-based outfit back in 2007 is a good ‘marker’.
“It's proof that it’s been done before, which is positive. Lewis is a fantastic driver,” he stated.
“Not one thing [is important in 2014 though], it's the whole challenge of being in F1. Being with McLaren is what I'm most excited about,” he continued.
“I feel pressure [of course], because McLaren is a top team, and they expect big results - but not EXTRA pressure because of my dad [and because he raced in F1]!” the 21-year-old concluded.
