Rosberg: Mercedes can beat Red Bull
10 December 2013 – Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg says he is confident of toppling key rivals Red Bull next season, after his team's progress during the 2013 campaign.
Having endured a challenging end to 2012, the Silver Arrows bounced back to secure three victories and finish second in the Constructors' standings.
And although the points deficit to Red Bull stood at 236, Rosberg reckons the steps that have already been made prove that Mercedes can be title winners.
"We've made massive progress and everybody believes that this team can do it and beat Red Bull," he said.
"We've shown we have such competence and such a great car after making a massive step over the winter.
"There's this momentum now and everybody in the team believes that we can make it happen. It's not that we didn't before, but we have the facts to back it up now."
Rosberg went on to explain that next year's regulation changes, spearheaded by turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 engines, provide the perfect platform for Mercedes.
"I'm looking forward to it a lot. It's a great opportunity to close that gap to Red Bull and make a big step," he said.
"It's a great opportunity not only for the car but also the engine. Getting it together is a massive mission for everybody, but I think we're ready for such a mission. It's the right moment and we're ready for it."
He added: "From a driver's perspective I'm also very happy that there are so many big changes, as I really enjoy the whole technical side. I can nearly call it a passion – I'm really interested in it and I like to get the most out of it.
"I hope that maybe I can pull out a bit of an advantage from all these changes that are coming."
