Mallya: Budget cap 'brilliant news', can work
19 December 2013 – Force India F1 team boss Vijay Mallya has welcomed plans to bring in a budget cap in 2015 and he believes it can work.
The basic terms of the ‘global cost cap’ were agreed ‘in principle’ at the start of the month, following a meeting of the F1 Strategy Group and the Formula One Commission in Paris.
A working group will now be established to consider the finer details, before the regulations are approved in full at the end of June 2014.
“Brilliant news - I hope it’s implemented. It should have happened a few years ago actually, but better late than never,” Mallya told the official F1 site last week, after Sergio Pérez was confirmed at Force India alongside Nico Hülkenberg.
Pressed on if a cap is actually enforceable, Mallya added: “At the end of the day, when this was first proposed by FOTA [Formula One Teams Association] three years ago, there was a mechanism put in place to police it.
“But if people want to cheat and be dishonest they can, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that any team principal who signs off on a declaration would necessarily push the envelope.
“Self-governance is better than imposed governance.
"Once you agree and you’re all together I think it’s almost incumbent on a team principal to make sure the rules are followed,” he summed-up.
