'Fighter' Schumacher turns 45
3 January 2014 – Seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher remains in intensive care in Grenoble on the day of his 45th birthday.
The German has been an induced coma since suffering serious head injuries on Sunday morning in a skiing accident in the French Alps. The last official update was issued on Wednesday with Schumacher’s spokesperson Sabine Kehm confirming he is stable but critical. No further updates will be given unless there is a change in his condition.
A statement from his family - posted recently on Schumacher’s official website - reads:
“Thank you for your support
“Following Michael's skiing accident, we would like to thank the people from all around the world who have expressed their sympathy and sent their best wishes for his recovery. They are giving us great support.
“We all know he is a fighter and will not give up.
Ferrari meanwhile has issued another statement to coincide with the German’s birthday: “This is a special day for Ferrari and all its fans, as it is Michael Schumacher’s birthday,” it reads. “At the moment, he is tackling the most important fight of his life and therefore we want to send him very special wishes.
"Everyone at Ferrari, from president Luca di Montezemolo and team principal Stefano Domenicali, who are in touch all the time with Michael’s family and those closest to him, are continuously watching how his situation evolves.
"Obviously, today there are double the reasons to wish him all the best.”
