Pirelli brings special 'winter' tyre to Jerez
27 January 2014 – Pirelli has developed a slick winter tyre for use throughout the opening pre-season test at Jerez.
The Italian manufacturer, which recently extended its Formula 1 contract for another three years, will supply teams with the compound – based on this year's Hard tyre – in a bid to counteract poor weather conditions.
All four slick P Zero compounds, plus the Intermediate and Full Wet tyres, will also be available to teams.
"Last year, the teams lost some pre-season running due to excessively cold conditions in Spain: we even saw some ice on the track at one point," said Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery ahead of the test.
"In order to combat this, we have developed a special 'winter' version of the Hard compound tyre. This will be used for the Jerez test only and it is designed to work effectively even in cold conditions."
Hembery went on to explain that, despite the traditionally cold weather in southern Spain at this time of year, lessons can still be learned from a tyre perspective given the massive technical regulation changes.
"This first test is an opportunity to see how the new cars interact with our latest tyres, considering the differences between all the 2014 cars," he said. "Jerez will be an official test but also a learning experience for everyone.
"The 2014 tyres are just as different to their predecessors as the 2014 cars, with the majority of our preparation work having been carried out by using advanced data simulation, as well as real on-track testing."
Hembery added that final day of the Jerez test has been set aside for mandatory wet weather testing.
