The car is not bad, explains Maldonado
27 February 2014 – Pastor Maldonado remains confident about the potential of the Lotus E22 despite encountering more problems on the first day of the third test in Bahrain.
Maldonado caused a red flag period during the morning when he stopped on track and a subsequent exhaust failure truncated his running.
The Venezuelan driver ended the day 10th out of the 11 runners, having completed 31 laps.
"It wasn't what we wanted today, but we are all working very hard to make progress and I'm sure we'll have solutions quite soon as a team, and it's clear we have good potential and the car is not bad," he said.
"We have had some problems but we are fixing them and we are making improvements with electronics and software every day we run."
Lotus trialled a new specification exhaust system and its failure means that they will revert to the old model for Friday's running.
"Unfortunately, our new specification exhaust system failed, causing a small amount of damage to the surrounding area of the car," said Trackside Operations Director Alan Permane.
"This stopped us running early due to the rectification work required. For tomorrow, we will run with our previous specification of exhaust and we do not expect to see any similar problems to those we saw today."
Maldonado will continue to test the E22 on Friday before handing over to team-mate Romain Grosjean for the final two days of track action.
