Ecclestone proposes Azerbaijan race in 2016
5 March 2014 – Bernie Ecclestone has said that Formula 1 could head to Azerbaijan for the first time in 2016.
According to British newspaper The Daily Mail, the sport will race in the country courtesy of a deal facilitated by former Renault Team Principal Flavio Briatore, who has business interests in Azerbaijan.
The race will take place on the streets of the country's capital, Baku.
"We're going to Azerbaijan," said Ecclestone.
"The people out there [in Azerbaijan] are talking about holding a race in 2015. That may be a bit soon – unless it's at the end of the season, that's a possibility. But 2016 is more likely."
Azerbaijan is therefore one of a number of countries seeking to join the ever-changing Formula 1 calendar.
The Indian Grand Prix is scheduled for a return in early 2015 after it was dropped from the 2014 roster. A race around the streets of Weehawken in New Jersey has twice been postponed but could finally join the calendar in 2015. Mexico's Hermanos Rodríguez circuit was also included on the draft 2014 calendar, but the organisers have been given an extra year to improve facilities.
