Gearbox penalties for Gutiérrez, Bottas
15 March 2014 – Esteban Gutiérrez and Valtteri Bottas are both set to drop five places on the grid for this weekend's Australian Grand Prix, with the pair forced into gearbox changes after hitting trouble during final practice.
Gutiérrez reported a suspected gearbox issue over the radio in the early stages of the session. The Mexican crawled back to the pits, where Sauber mechanics confirmed his thoughts and started to make the change.
Bottas, meanwhile, was held in the Williams garage after his early installation laps. The outfit promptly diagnosed the problem with his unit and also set about resolving the situation ahead of qualifying later this afternoon.
To avoid being hit with a grid penalty, gearboxes must complete six races before they are changed.
