Hamilton ecstatic after 'very tough' pole position
15 March 2014 – Lewis Hamilton expressed his happiness after claiming pole position for the Australian Grand Prix.
Hamilton edged out Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo during a wet Q3 to claim the first pole position of 2014 and said that it was a 'tough' session.
"It was very tough," he said. "[There's] so much more power and wheelspin, the toughest I've ever had to drive in the wet.
"It's been an interesting weekend and today it made it much harder with the conditions but I'm really happy for the job the team did. These new cars are a lot harder to drive in the wet and it was my first time in the wet. [It was] a serious task and challenge today but both me and Nico [Rosberg] is great for the team and it's great to see Riccardo here as well."
Hamilton remained on Wet tyres as conditions improved during Q3 and said that Mercedes was not willing to risk switching to Intermediates.
"It was on the limit, difficult to know what the turnover point is. Do you take a risk? We decided not to. Daniel did a good job on the inters and it was close call, the conditions made it difficult because of the increased power, shifting fifth, sixth, seventh [gear] before full throttle, so I hope its dry tomorrow."
