Maldonado cleared to race by stewards
15 March 2014 – Pastor Maldonado has been cleared to race in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix, despite failing to meet the 107 per cent rule in qualifying.
The Lotus driver was the only person not to post a lap time in Q1, having lost control of his car in the closing minutes of the session.
After meeting to assess the situation, the stewards gave Maldonado the green light to race following the lap times he posted during final practice, and providing that "such a grant is not precedent for further races."
FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting explained earlier this week that the 107 per cent rule is likely to be relaxed in the early stages of the season due to the challenges brought on by the 2014 technical regulation overhaul.
