Coulthard: Mercedes can be caught
18 March 2014 – David Coulthard has said Mercedes can be caught this season and that the likes of Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren will be able to challenge them for wins and ultimate honours, although he concedes it ‘won’t be easy’.
Nico Rosberg dominated the season opening 2014 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, leading from lights-to-flag in his F1 W05. However it wasn’t all rosy for the German giant, as pole sitter and team-mate, Lewis Hamilton retired early on in the sister car due to a misfiring cylinder.
“Mercedes can be caught, but it will not be easy,” Coulthard confirmed in his BBC Sport post-race review. “History shows that anyone who racks up a lot of points in the first part of the season tends to be very difficult to beat to the world championship.
“Mercedes are in that position on merit and it's for the others to work up to them, in the same way Mercedes had to work hard in the last few years to try to catch Red Bull.”
Meanwhile, DC also added that Hamilton shouldn’t be too concerned by his DNF: “Lewis Hamilton will be disappointed not to have finished but there is a long way to go in the championship and it could easily have been Rosberg's car that had the problem,” he pointed out.
