Vettel says podium beyond Red Bull's expectations
30 March 2014 – Reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel says that finishing on the podium at the Malaysian Grand Prix was beyond the expectations of his Red Bull team.
Vettel started from the front row of the grid but slipped behind Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo on the opening lap of the race.
Vettel swiftly dispatched Ricciardo but was unable to challenge the Mercedes of Rosberg and settled for third position.
"Yeah, it is [beyond expectations]" he said. "Just look where we were one and a half months ago. It’s important what we’ve done since then, a massive job from team and Renault. Both are pushing flat out."
Vettel concedes that Mercedes, which now has a 53 point advantage over sixth placed Red Bull in the constructors' championship, has an advantage, but is confident that his squad can claw back their deficit.
"Mercedes is still quite a bit ahead and always have enough in hand to respond. It is up to us how quick we managed to come back," he added. "At the moment it looks like we’re making bigger steps than them, so I hope it continues. For now obviously it's important to collect points but we’ll try and be where they are soon."
