Gutiérrez given all clear after Maldonado clash
6 April 2014 – Esteban Gutiérrez has been given the all clear by doctors after his Turn 1 collision with Pastor Maldonado during the Bahrain Grand Prix.
The Sauber driver was flipped into a dramatic roll by his Lotus rival – who had just left the pits – in the closing stages of the night race.
Having stepped out of his stricken car unassisted, he was later taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary checks, which were all passed.
"I was completely surprised that Pastor, who came out of the pits, ran into me," he said. "I was clearly in front of him. I turned into the corner and I was suddenly hit and I rolled over. There was nothing much I could do."
Maldonado, meanwhile, said he had "nowhere to go" in the moments leading up to the incident.
"We will need to have a look again at what happened as Esteban seemed to be off his line coming into Turn 1 – maybe he missed his braking point, I don't know – and by then I was in the corner with nowhere to go," he said.
"It's difficult to understand [what happened] and I was coming out from the pits and with cold tyres."
The Venezuelan added his relief that Gutiérrez avoided any serious injuries in the crash.
"I think he was very unlucky and it's good he jumped straight out of the car," said Maldonado.
