I always had faith in Pérez, says Mallya
7 April 2014 – Force India team boss Vijay Mallya says he always believed in the talent of Sergio Pérez, after the Mexican's podium finish in Bahrain.
Pérez, who began his F1 career at Sauber, made the step up to McLaren for the 2013 campaign, but struggled to live up to lofty expectations.
Force India handed him a lifeline this season and, despite tough races in Australia and Malaysia, he rewarded the squad with its first rostrum since the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix at the Sakhir circuit on Sunday evening.
"I made the decision to bring Sergio on board only because I had a great amount of conviction and faith in his talent," Mallya told Sky Sports.
"I feel that he was chosen by McLaren because McLaren saw something special in him – I did when he was at Sauber – and I am delighted to have him, delighted to have Nico Hülkenberg and have a great driver line-up."
As a result of Pérez's podium and Hülkenberg's fifth place finish, Force India finds itself occupying second in the Constructors' standings after the opening three rounds, leaving Mallya optimistic for the rest of the season.
"I said with our limited resources we will get better every year," Mallya went on to explain. "I said that in 2014 we have a new chance and we have shown it in Australia, Malaysia and now Bahrain so I couldn't be happier."
