Mercedes can be caught, says Boullier
9 April 2014 – Eric Boullier is confident that McLaren has what it takes to catch current F1 pace-setters Mercedes.
Although Mercedes has a sizeable advantage over the rest of the field at present, Boullier – who joined McLaren in a new role of Race Director ahead of the season – has put his faith in an "aggressive" development plan.
"To be honest, I think it is," explained Boullier, when asked during a McLaren-Mercedes phone conference if it is realistic to believe that McLaren can catch Mercedes. "It's true that the gap is huge now, but a one-second gap is catchable. I know a lot of areas we can work on and improve, so I think they can definitely be caught."
"We are aggressively developing now to make sure that we can catch up with them. We don't know if we will have caught them by the European races, but we'll definitely try to close the gap as much as possible."
Boullier also shares Jenson Button's view that McLaren is the second best team behind Mercedes.
"If you look at the performance graph from Jenson [in Bahrain], we had the potential to finish in front of the Force Indias," he said. "I agree with Jenson that we could be the second-fastest team but it is very, very tight."
