Di Montezemolo to increase F1 involvement
16 April 2014 – Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo has revealed that he is going to be more hands-on with the F1 programme from now on as the Scuderia looks to return to winning ways under new Team Principal Marco Mattiacci.
Stefano Domenicali stepped down earlier this week and while the appointment of Mattiacci - the President and CEO of the marque's North American arm – was rather a surprise, Montezemolo believes he can get the job done and has promised to do all he can to help get him up to speed.
"I will assist him," di Montezemolo told Italian newspaper, Gazzetta dello Sport. "I am going to do what I use to and will stay closer to F1. I will spend more time on it. I am not happy at the moment. I am putting myself on the line, but Mattiacci – our number one in the USA, is the right choice. I chose him in full agreement with [Fiat CEO] Sergio Marchionne. He will do a good job. I'm confident. We will win very soon."
"Now we must roll up our sleeves and work for a competitive return. I expect a great response from the team," he added.
Meanwhile, Montezemolo reiterated his respect for Domenicali: "Stefano had the courage to resign. He obviously pays for the lack of results - it's a rule in sports that you must succeed. But let me remind you that since 2007 we have won three world titles and we have nearly won as many more too, and a couple of them at the season's finale. It is no small achievement and that really must not be forgotten," di Montezemolo remarked.
