Button expects Mercedes to stay dominant
17 April 2014 – Jenson Button expects Mercedes to continue its dominance of the 2014 season for the foreseeable future, admitting that it could take "a long time" for any team to put the championship leaders under pressure.
Nico Rosberg (1) and Lewis Hamilton (2) have taken the three victories on offer so far, leading all laps between them and pulling away at over two seconds a lap following the late Safety Car period at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
With this in mind, Button feels it will take a monumental effort for the top end of the pecking order to change.
"I don't think anyone will get anywhere near the Mercedes for a long time," Button said of the situation.
"We are bringing updates all the time but for any team to find a second over the next few races is a big ask. And that's with Mercedes standing still – they're not going to do that. It's going to be tough. We have to be realistic."
Button says McLaren should now focus on establishing itself as the second best team in the coming races.
"We are miles behind Mercedes but we are in a good scrap with five other teams and it's enjoyable," said Button. "We are trying to improve and even half a tenth will make a big difference because of how the grid is.
"We feel we can develop faster than most, but it's important to get points over the next couple of races."
