Vettel targets top five finish at Shanghai
17 April 2014 – Sebastian Vettel says he would see a top five finish at the Chinese Grand Prix as a good result.
The German, who won the last nine races of the 2013 season, is yet to taste success this season, with Mercedes dominating the field and his Red Bull team lacking raw performance amid Renault's power unit problems.
"It's a big gap," said Vettel. "Bahrain was very bad for all except Mercedes, but I think here it will be a bit different.
"You have to say though and admit that this is one of the circuits that favoured Mercedes in the last couple of years. We expect them to be strong because of the nature of the track. They are in very good shape. So they are the favourites, but for us I think we made some improvements at the test. We made some improvements with the car but also with the power unit. So we should expect a step here, but how big we will have to wait and see.
"Surely it would be a massive surprise if we could close down the gap [to Mercedes] here. You have to be realistic. For us [the target is] to try to be as close as we can. If we can be in the top five then that's good."
Red Bull currently sits fourth in the Constructors' standings on 35 points, 76 adrift of leaders Mercedes.
