Vettel still searching for engine improvement
18 April 2014 – Sebastian Vettel says he and Red Bull are still searching for improvements with Renault's new turbocharged power unit.
The French manufacturer has struggled to run its latest creation at its optimal level so far this season, but explained that it would be "closer to the limit" than ever before at this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix.
Although he noticed progress at the Shanghai circuit on Friday, Vettel reckons there is much more to come in future races.
"It's not as if we've gained power," said the reigning World Champion. "We'd love to but that's not really possible. Tuning the bits that we have, it feeds the feeling a lot and that's where we still need to do some work."
One of the key talking points throughout Friday practice was the high level of tyre degradation, but Vettel expects the situation to improve as the circuit rubbers in, providing there is no rainfall for the rest of the event.
"We were pretty average. I haven't seen what the others did, but they probably suffered the same," he said.
"I think it [degradation] will get better as the weekend goes on, but it depends on what weather we have tomorrow and on Sunday. If it's dry on both days then the circuit will ramp up but if it's wet then it resets every time."
