Honda: No plans to supply second team in 2015
18 April 2014 – Honda's Yasuhisa Arai says that the Japanese manufacturer has no plans to supply power units to a second team when they return to the sport next season.
Honda will return to Formula 1 next year after a six year absence as partners of McLaren, but speaking at the FIA press conference in China, Arai insisted that they currently have no plans to supply a second team.
"For 2015, McLaren is our only customer," he said. "I don't think about the future, because we want to concentrate on next season. "Of course we want to have good results next season and see the results from other manufacturers. If teams want to use our engine or power unit, we can deliver after 2016 but right now there are no plans."
Arai added that Honda was enticed back to the sport by Formula 1's new regulations and its move towards a more environmentally friendly set-up.
"One of the major reasons for our decision was the new regulation introduced this year and that the various environment… I mean green technologies in the new Formula One power unit, as well as the total energy management are both very challenging and significant," he said.
"The new regulations encourage each power unit supplier to pursue the ultimate combustions efficiency and high pressure direct injections. Thus the challenge is to convert each unit of gasoline into energy and this is expected to be reflected on the huge production mode."
