Hülkenberg targets podium after strong start
25 April 2014 – Nico Hülkenberg says he is targeting a podium finish after a strong start to the 2014 season on his return to Force India.
The Silverstone-based team is currently in third place in the constructors' championship, having amassed 54 points from the opening four races of the year, with Hülkenberg having scored 36 of those points to sit in fourth place in the championship.
Hülkenberg finished the first four races in either fifth or sixth position and the German is targeting matching the achievement of team-mate Sergio Pérez, who climbed onto the podium in Bahrain.
"One of your ambitions must be to get a podium finish this year," Hülkenberg told Times of India. "It's definitely the goal, but the most important thing is consistency over the year and to make sure we are scoring points at each race."
Hülkenberg also believes that Force India is reaping the rewards of its decision to abandon development of its 2013 car early in order to switch focus to 2014. The team scored strong results early on in 2013 but slipped back mid-season and collected just a handful of points as they went from challenging McLaren for fifth in the championship to fending off Sauber in the battle for sixth.
"I think new regulations create a reset for all teams," added Hulkenberg. "It changes the established order a bit and that is what we've seen this year. I think it has given us a chance to be more competitive than in previous seasons. The team sacrificed a lot last year to concentrate on 2014 and I think it has proved to be a sensible decision."
