Long Beach rules out Formula 1 return
27 April 2014 – Formula 1 will not return to Long Beach in the immediate future after organisers announced that the circuit has extended its contract with IndyCar until 2018.
Long Beach promoter Chris Pook had been eager for the circuit to host Formula 1 events, despite admitting that the track would require $9m of upgrades in order to meet the required safety standards.
Long Beach City Council has left the door open for Formula 1 in the future after requesting proposals from other series when the new contract expires in June 2018.
Formula 1 raced at Long Beach between 1976 and 1983. Various American categories, including CART, Champ Car and IndyCar, have raced at the circuit since 1984.
The most recent event was held earlier this month, with Mike Conway emerging victorious.
