Kovalainen to become Mercedes tester - report
29 April 2014 – Former McLaren and Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen is on the verge of inking a deal to become an official test driver for Mercedes.
Kovalainen has been negotiating with the team for a while and talks are now said to be 'advanced', the Ilta-Sanomat newspaper in his native Finland reports. If the 32-year-old does join Mercedes, he will again link up with Lewis Hamilton, who he was teamed with at McLaren in 2008 and 2009.
Kovalainen made his Formula 1 debut with the Renault in 2007 and claimed his sole F1 victory in 2008 in Hungary after switching to McLaren. He was, though, dropped by the Woking-based team at the end of 2009.
He then switched to the squad now known as Caterham and last year was drafted in by Lotus F1 - the outfit that gave him his chance at the pinnacle of the sport, albeit in its old guise - when he stood in for the injured Kimi Räikkönen for the final two races of the 2013 F1 season.
His performances, however, in the USA and Brazil, were not exactly spectacular and he finished a lowly 14th in both grands prix.
