Red Bull has the best car, reckons Pérez
8 May 2014 – Force India driver Sergio Pérez reckons Red Bull has the best chassis on the 2014 Formula 1 grid, despite the fact that Mercedes has dominated en route to the opening four race victories of the season.
While Mercedes has surged clear in the engine battle, Red Bull engine partner Renault has struggled for outright performance and reliability with its new turbocharged unit since pre-season testing.
Although he admits it is unlikely that Mercedes will be challenged at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, Pérez can see Red Bull and others cutting the gap as the campaign progresses.
"I think in the next couple of races things are going to settle down and we'll see where everyone is. Some teams will make big improvements and close the gap," said Pérez.
"In the past we've seen that the season is long – four races is nothing. They're [Mercedes] quite far ahead and with a big gap to anyone else, but I think Ferrari and Red Bull will close quite a lot the gap.
"I believe Red Bull has the best car – that's my opinion."
Pérez thinks that Force India is in the mix to be best of the rest behind Mercedes, but is wary of rival gains.
"I think we are not far off Williams," said Pérez, whose team sits third in the championship standings.
"McLaren have struggled quite a lot since the first race. They looked very competitive in the first race, but for some reason they haven't been any more competitive. In Bahrain they were a little bit competitive, but other than that they are not at the moment. We know they are a good team, so hopefully they don't come back!"
