Hamilton 'pleasantly surprised' by first day
9 May 2014 – Lewis Hamilton says he was "pleasantly surprised" by how well his opening day of practice for the Spanish Grand Prix progressed.
The Mercedes driver comfortably topped both 90-minute sessions at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, revealing that he is in a positive position in terms of tyre management.
"It felt pretty bad in the morning but we made some changes and the afternoon was pretty good," Hamilton said of his degradation levels.
"I was pleasantly surprised – today has gone well."
Looking towards the battle for pole, Hamilton added: "It's always important, as it's very difficult to overtake here.
"We'll do everything to get as high as possible. But the race is most important and looking after the tyres."
Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate, Nico Rosberg, ended the day second fastest, 0.449 seconds adrift.
