Hamilton doubted pole was possible
10 May 2014 – Lewis Hamilton says he doubted pole position was possible after his early Saturday struggles in Barcelona.
Having topped both practice sessions on Friday, the Briton slipped behind Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in final practice and remained slower in Q1 and Q2.
But he delivered a blistering lap in the final shootout to take the top spot.
"It's been a tough day," Hamilton reflected. "Nico has been driving really well. I didn't know if I would be able to get it [pole position] but right at the end I got everything and more from the car."
Hamilton says he has been spurred on by his team's constant push for improvements.
"We didn't know where everyone was going to be," he said. "Seeing the development and hard work inspires me.
"To have the kind of performance we have… I've never really known it before."
