Ricciardo surprised by gap to Mercedes
10 May 2014 – Daniel Ricciardo says he is surprised by the sizeable advantage Mercedes held over the rest of the field during qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Ricciardo finished as best of the rest behind Silver Arrows duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in Saturday's grid-deciding session, but was a full second off the pace.
"We are again best of the best but it's not quite good enough. We're still a second off," said Ricciardo.
"I thought my lap was not too bad, so I was expecting a smaller gap. We've made some improvements, but Mercedes have as well. I'd have liked to close that [gap], so there's still some work ahead of us."
Ricciardo did at least draw optimism from the fact that Red Bull was a clear third, with Williams driver Valtteri Bottas more than three tenths further adrift.
"A positive is that we're a clear third today. That's not too bad," he said. "But for sure we want to get closer to the front two."
