Vettel encouraged by charge to fourth
11 May 2014 – Sebastian Vettel was left feeling positive after his spirited drive from 15th on the grid to fourth during Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix.
The reigning quadruple World Champion, who was out of position following a qualifying stoppage and subsequent gearbox change, pulled off a string of bold passes to cross the line directly behind Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who notched up his first Formula 1 podium.
"We were quite happy with the car," said Vettel. "We had to be patient. In a train your car slides, the car in front of you slides and you lose grip.
"Once the traffic was clear, we were able to use the pace. We had a good strategy and had two sets of softer tyres at the end and could get past some people.
"I enjoyed it a lot and I think fourth is the best we could get today."
Although Mercedes dominated once more, Vettel is hopeful of putting up a fight as the season develops.
"[Mercedes] have a very good package with the engine, car and two very good drivers," he added.
"But it would be quite sad to go into the weekend and just aim for third. I think this weekend, from the team point of view, was good. At the next race we'll attack again."
