Alonso: Ferrari needs to start closing gap
11 May 2014 – Fernando Alonso says Ferrari needs to cut the gap to the front of the field after a challenging Spanish Grand Prix.
The Italian marque had hoped to move forward at the opening European race of the season, but struggled to sixth and seventh.
Fernando Alonso was the last of the drivers not to be lapped by the dominant Mercedes duo, edging out team-mate Kimi Räikkönen.
"We would obviously like to be fighting for first and second but unfortunately today we were not quick enough," said Alonso.
"At the end we had different strategies and I was able to pass Kimi. We haven't closed the gap like we intended and we need to close it in the next couple of races."
Despite Mercedes's current advantage, Alonso remains hopeful of reeling the team in.
"I think we need to work better and have a better car. We have the potential, we have the talented people, so we can do that together," he said.
"We can do it this season – it will be tough as we are so far behind, not just us but everyone, but we are in the fifth race of the championship.
"Our job is to make things hard for Mercedes because when they have a big gap they don't stress the mechanical side so we need to do better."
