Mercedes trials 'megaphone' exhaust
14 May 2014 – Mercedes has given a 'megaphone' exhaust its first on track running at the post-Spanish Grand Prix test as Formula 1 explores what can be done to raise the sound levels of the new turbocharged engines.
With the V6 power units noticeably quieter than their V8 predecessors, race promoters have expressed concerns about the direction the sport is heading in, prompting a meeting with Bernie Ecclestone over the weekend.
It was recently agreed that the sound could be artificially improved through the use of a trumpet-style exhaust design, with the Silver Arrows the first to test the concept on the second day of testing in Barcelona.
During Nico Rosberg's early runs, there was little audible difference between the two set-ups.
Mercedes has now finished its exhaust evaluation as Rosberg works through final test items.
