Ricciardo: We could have been much closer
24 May 2014 – Daniel Ricciardo was left feeling frustrated with his performance in Saturday's qualifying session in Monaco, admitting that he "could have been much closer" to the leading Mercedes duo.
In the morning's final practice hour, Ricciardo had been able to split Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, suggesting that Mercedes's dominance could be threatened.
But in Q3, Ricciardo made a crucial error at Turn 8 on his fastest attempt and had to settle for third, three tenths down on Hamilton.
"I think all three of us don't seem to be too pleased. We left a bit on the table," said Ricciardo in the post-qualifying press conference, alongside Rosberg and Hamilton.
"I fought the car pretty hard in qualifying, trying to find a bit more from it. I was getting around it OK but just coming up to Turn 8 I lost the rear completely on the exit. The lap was pretty much gone after that.
"It's frustrating. We could have been much closer, so I'm a bit disappointed."
In the sister Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel battled an ERS issue to claim fourth on the grid.
