Q3 lap my best of the year, claims Alonso
24 May 2014 – Fernando Alonso believes he delivered his "best lap of the year" to claim fifth on the grid for the Monaco Grand Prix.
With Mercedes and Red Bull locking out the front two rows of the grid, Alonso grabbed the next available slot, lapping seven tenths faster than team-mate Kimi Räikkönen.
On another positive note for the Spaniard and Ferrari, his gap to pole position was 0.697 seconds, compared to 1.908 seconds in Barcelona.
"I think this was probably my best of the year," Alonso said of his fastest effort.
"In Q2 I started to get some pace, pushing a little bit harder, and then in Q3 I extracted the maximum. The two laps were good; I was really happy with the laps and the balance of the car. We were only one or two tenths away from [Sebastian] Vettel, which is a good surprise.
"Obviously we still have to improve in all areas, but Monaco has been my best qualifying."
Räikkönen blamed his deficit to Alonso on poor car balance, something he feels was affected by his gearbox issue on Thursday.
"I'm not happy with this qualifying, because even though we worked hard on the set-up, making several changes, my feeling with the car didn't improve much," said the Finn.
"Right from Thursday I had to fight to find the best solution and the time lost during the second free practice session certainly didn't help. On top of that, we are not able to make the tyres work well here and in that situation, it's not easy to put together a good lap, especially on a track where you don't get a second chance.
"Sixth place is not ideal, but neither is it a disaster and tomorrow we will do our best to get the most out of it."
