Alonso to wave starters flag at Le Mans
27 May 2014 – Two-time F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso will wave the official starting flag at the Le Mans 24 Hours next month, it has been confirmed.
Alonso has been invited by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest as 'a leading representative of Ferrari'.
"I am very happy to have been chosen to start this race, because it is one of a handful of races that has defined the history of motor sport," he told the Scuderia's official website.
Alonso also added that he is looking forward to catching up with former Red Bull driver Mark Webber, who is now racing in sportscars with Porsche: "For sure, it will be nice to see Mark Webber, who is a great friend of mine. We miss him in Formula 1 and I want to know how he's getting on in Endurance racing," added the Spaniard.
Alonso will become the first driver currently racing to give the start at the event. He will also join a number of other notable starters, including Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, who did the honours back in 2009.
Meanwhile, it was announced that ex-Toyota F1 driver and three-time Le Mans winner, Allan McNish will be the Grand Marshal.
