Ricciardo 'still growing, still getting better'
27 May 2014 – Daniel Ricciardo has said he was confident he would be capable of challenging Red Bull team-mate and four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel this season.
Ricciardo took his second podium in succession last weekend in Monaco - and third of the year if you include the one he lost in Australia through no fault of his own. The result moved him up to fourth in the Drivers' Championship and he now has 54 points on the board, 9 more than Vettel, who has 45.
"I did not really have any visions exactly on how it would go, what the race results would be or what the qualifying score would be [this year] – but I knew that I have some talent and obviously got a bit of experience now in Formula 1," Ricciardo commented after his latest rostrum result in Monte Carlo, round six of the 2014 F1 World Championship.
"So, every year, even every six month period, I feel I am still growing and getting better as a driver as well. So, I knew coming into the season with the team behind me and sort of a new opportunity, that I would be able to challenge Seb."
"Did I think it would be going, let us say, as well as it was now?" he pondered. "I don't know.
"But I knew if I had everything underneath me I would be capable of getting the results. So, fortunately the team saw that as well, back in September, I think, last year [when they signed me to replace Mark Webber].
"So, it is coming good."
