Gutiérrez encouraged by Sauber improvements
5 June 2014 – Sauber driver Esteban Gutiérrez says he is encouraged by the team's pace during the Monaco Grand Prix, despite the Swiss team enduring a difficult event.
Gutiérrez was running in seventh place in Monaco when he made an error and caused terminal damage to the car.
Combined with Marussia's maiden points finish, the result meant that Sauber slipped to 10th place in the Constructors' championship.
"In the race we were better than expected, we were trying to hold the positions and Kimi [Räikkönen] was not able to close very much on me – I was able to keep on the Williams during the race so that's something and obviously requires zero mistakes, but then one came up and it was a big one," he said.
Gutiérrez insists that neither he nor Sauber can afford to have too many regrets over the error.
"But we cannot hold back – the car is improving step by step in terms of driveability and Ferrari is [improving] as well, this is something we have to use," he added. "We need it here as in Montreal we have long straights – it has to come and that's where we're going to use it fully."
