Ricciardo: Red Bull must nail it in qualifying
6 June 2014 – Daniel Ricciardo says he and his Red Bull team must "nail it" in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix to avoid a lowly grid position.
While team-mate Sebastian Vettel finished the opening day of practice in third position, Ricciardo struggled with car balance and wound up 12th.
Asked if he can expect to fight with the Mercedes-powered cars behind the pace-setting works duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, Ricciardo said: "If we can get it right we can definitely challenge them.
"But it is really close, and if we don't get it right then we can be a long way back as we have seen. We have to make sure that we nail it.
"There are a few teams who can challenge if not for the front row then for the second row. It seems to be a bit more even this week. We have to try to make sure that we are extracting everything out of it to get in front."
Vettel lost track time during the second session due to a gearbox problem, but was encouraged by his day.
"It was a bit of a shame to lose a lot of laps, but fortunately we could go out again," he commented.
"We were a little bit off the rhythm compared to other people but seemed to be OK and did some good laps. There is still a lot of improvement we can do [but] obviously Mercedes are very, very quick around here."
