I needed new challenges, says Newey
8 June 2014 – Adrian Newey has broken the silence regarding his decision to reduce his involvement in Red Bull's Formula 1 operation, explaining that he needed "new challenges and stimulation" moving forward.
The respected design chief has agreed a new "multi-year agreement" with the reigning quadruple World Champions, but is decreasing his Formula 1 responsibilities in favour of yet-to-be-named side projects.
"I had a great time in Formula 1 but it's time to get involved in some different things," Newey told Sky Sports.
Newey says he will gradually step back from Red Bull's F1 design department in the coming seasons.
"Certainly for next year," he said, when asked about his involvement in the fundamental design of upcoming Red Bull machines. "Then [I'll be] working with the guys in the future in terms of mentoring and being an advisor."
He concluded: "I've loved the career I've had, but I feel that I need some new challenges and stimulation."
