Rosberg: Mercedes needs to be bulletproof
10 June 2014 – Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has called on his team to need make sure the cars are 'bulletproof' in the aftermath of the Canadian Grand Prix.
Mercedes looked set for another dominant one-two in Montreal until around halfway through the race when Rosberg and team-mate Lewis Hamilton both suffered a loss in power. Hamilton was then forced to retire 10 or so laps later when his rear brakes failed and while Rosberg was able to nurse his ailing car to the chequered flag, and still take second, only losing out to Daniel Ricciardo with two or three laps to go, it is clear what happened is a concern.
"We need to keep pushing of course and we need to make sure that we are bulletproof," Rosberg said after the race and after extending his lead in the 2014 Formula 1 Drivers' Championship to 22 points.
"I was pleased that I was managing to stay ahead [once we lost the ERS] and OK, one guy got by but I still managed to hold on. However, in hindsight, of course, having lost the win, that is very, very disappointing, definitely, and also disappointing for us as a team.
"We have such speed and such a great car, to not win the race and even just finish with one car and come second is hugely disappointing for us."
"Our ambition is to finish one-two so we need to make sure that we get back there again in the next race in Austria," he added.
