Kvyat to draw on past Austria experiences
17 June 2014 – Toro Rosso rookie Daniil Kvyat is hopeful that his previous experience of the Red Bull Ring will pay dividends when he drives a Formula 1 car at the circuit for the first time at this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix.
The 20-year-old Russian, who feels his driving style suits the Spielberg venue, is looking to end a three-race run outside of the points-paying positions, after notching up a trio of top 10 results from his opening four races.
"I raced here in Formula Renault Alps and had two wins there in 2012. I had a great weekend and really loved the track," said Kvyat. "Last year I went back to the Red Bull Ring with Formula 3 this time and again I had great memories, taking three poles out of three, followed by three second places in the races.
"It's my kind of track, with heavy braking points. It is also quite technical. It has some fast and medium speed corners which I really enjoy. Hopefully the STR9 will go well there."
Kvyat admits the event will be vital for the Red Bull brand, but does not feel nervous about the prospect.
"It's going to be a big weekend for the Red Bull family, but I will be concentrating on the usual jobs of getting everything sorted, finding the right set-up from first practice and having the right approach," he said.
