Hockenheim: Nürburgring press release a joke
18 June 2014 – Hockenheim circuit boss Georg Seiler has described as "a joke" the press release issued by the Nürburgring's new owners, claiming that it is close to becoming the permanent home of the German Grand Prix.
According to Capricorn, due to take full ownership of the Nürburgring at the beginning of next year, a deal has been reached with Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to host the event for at least five seasons from 2015.
"I find it incredible. It is a joke that this press release was issued," Seiler told the SID news agency.
"In this world it's an unwritten law that you don't send out any statement while you're negotiating."
Hockenheim, which has alternated with the Nürburgring since 2007, is due to host three more races under its current contract; this year's German Grand Prix plus events in 2016 and 2018.
And according to Seiler, there is no way that Ecclestone will be able to cancel the agreement.
"He [Ecclestone] cannot and will not terminate the contract," Seiler clarified.
