Ricciardo targets best of the rest position
20 June 2014 – Canadian Grand Prix race winner Daniel Ricciardo says Red Bull must try to be the 'best of the rest' behind pace-setters Mercedes at this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix.
Ricciardo was eighth quickest during second practice at the Red Bull Ring on a day in which both he and team-mate Sebastian Vettel appeared to struggle with the handling of the RB10.
But the Australian remains confident that the reigning World Champions can bounce back and challenge for the podium at their official home race.
"We're still that gap off. Each race we hope we are going to close, but today it's still there," he said.
"I think we have a bit more time to find tomorrow than they do and I think we'll close the gap. It won't be over a second tomorrow, but I guess the best thing for us is to make sure we are in front of the others and try to be the next best."
"To be top three is going to be more challenging this weekend, but I think we can still get there. So let's aim for at least a top five and then anything better we will be happy with that."
Vettel was sixth fastest and believes that Red Bull's predicament should improve when hotter conditions arrive on Saturday.
"This morning we struggled a little bit too much, this afternoon I think was better," said the German, who suffered a high-speed spin in the first session.
"I think we're seeing people are struggling to get the primes, the harder tyre, to work, it should be a different story tomorrow when it is hotter. We made some progress in the afternoon.
"We are not the favourites going into this weekend, we'd love to be but we're not there yet. If anything the fact that it is our home grand prix is an extra motivation for the team."
