Hamilton pleased with 'damage limitation'
22 June 2014 – Lewis Hamilton says he succeeded in limiting the damage of his qualifying error by finishing second in the Austrian Grand Prix.
Starting from ninth on the grid after failing to record a time in the final shootout, Hamilton completed a stunning first lap to rise to fourth, before picking off Williams drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.
Hamilton was unable to usurp team-mate Nico Rosberg, but stopped the German from extending his lead by more than seven points.
"It was a great start, probably the best start I've ever had in Formula 1," commented Hamilton, who burst into the top five on the run to the first corner before passing Ferrari rival Fernando Alonso at Turn 8.
"What I was hoping for today was damage limitation so I'm grateful I got that start. It really gave me a boost."
He added: "I just needed to finish the lap yesterday. If I did that lap it would have been a different result.
"But it's a great result for the team, a one-two finish, and I just need to work harder."
Hamilton trails Rosberg by 29 points in the standings ahead of the British Grand Prix.
