Domenicali: Mercedes to stay top for long time
25 June 2014 – Former Ferrari Formula 1 Team Principal Stefano Domenicali has predicted that Mercedes will keep its current advantage for a 'long time'.
Mercedes have set the standard this year under the new regulations, with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton giving the works' team its sixth one-two of 2014 in Austria last weekend, while seven of the top-ten finishers at the Red Bull Ring were powered by Mercedes-Benz engines. Domenicali believes Mercedes' rivals will now be hard pushed to close that gap.
"As I said last year, it was clear that the teams that were strong at the beginning would keep that advantage for the season because with such a step change in technology to close the gap in a situation where the regulation is more or less frozen is very difficult," he explained in a FIA newsletter, circulated this week at the end of day one of the FIA's annual Sports Conference in Munich.
"Mercedes have done a great job and they will keep this advantage for a long time. I hope the others will be able to close the gap soon, though, because at this stage you need to have races that are emotionally engaging. If you lose the passion it wouldn't be good," he added.
Meanwhile, when asked about the future, he reiterated that he is just enjoying the break at the moment.
"So far, I'm taking a breath," he replied.
"After 23 years of non-stop work it seems I have a bit of time now, so I'm taking the opportunity to be with my family, which has to be good. Yes, really good."
