Vettel heads Red Bull 1-2 in wet final practice
5 July 2014 – Sebastian Vettel set the pace during a rain-soaked final practice session for the British Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver set a 1:52.522 on Intermediates to lead team-mate Daniel Ricciardo by a tenth of a second, but Mercedes team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, did not post times.
With heavy rain falling overnight and continuing to a lesser extent through the morning, the Formula 1 field was greeted with a sodden track surface for the final pre-qualifying session.
The quickest lap times came with around half an hour left on the clock, Ricciardo jumping clear on a mid 1m52s effort before Vettel shaved 0.109s off the time to claim the top spot.
Lotus drivers Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean, the latter lucky to avoid a collision with the pit wall after spinning wildly on the exit of the final corner, were the closest to the Red Bull pair in third and fourth.
Adrian Sutil was one of few drivers to improve in the closing stages, placing his Sauber machine just ahead of Toro Rosso rookie Daniil Kvyat, who displayed masterful car control amid early car balance issues.
The McLarens of Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button were next up in seventh and eighth places, while the top 10 positions were completed by Williams driver Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen.
Hamilton, Rosberg and Alonso, who occupied the top three places on Friday, all opted against completing any timed laps, with the trio seemingly unwilling to risk accidents or over-using their limited tyre allocations.
Max Chilton also spent most of the session in his garage, having been forced into a gearbox change.
Marussia team-mate Jules Bianchi ended his morning in the barriers after running straight on at Stowe.
Saturday's qualifying session at Silverstone gets underway at 1pm local time (GMT +1)
